Mizz K (also known as The Duchess) was introduced to music at age 6 by her grandmother, when she brought home a piano and paid for an instructor. Mizz K began singing in the chorale group and playing in the percussion section of her junior high school marching band and continued to participate in them throughout the rest of her school career. During her high school years she expanded her horizons and started singing, playing bass guitar, & drumming for a few local South Florida rock bands. After finishing high school, Mizz K began playing concert vibraphone & marimba with Miami-Dade Community College’s Latin Jazz Ensemble. They played shows on the college campus as well as playing all over Coral Gables, Downtown Miami, and Miami Beach.
One day, while managing a small CD store in North Miami, she got a strange call from a telemarketer. After about 45 minutes on the phone, she had landed herself a position with Concrete Management out of Los Angeles, California. Concrete Management took Mizz K out of the local show circuit and enabled her to begin working on large arena scale concert promotions, organization, street promotions, and major label artist relations. She was able to work with groups like: Pantera, White Zombie, Primus, Deftones, Faith No More, and many others. She did work for major labels like: Sony, Universal, Interscope, TVT, and others. Towards the end of her tenure with Concrete, she was introduced to the electronic and dance music scene. She met and became friends with a couple, who she later found out were local distributors of Strictly Underground Corp.; an underground Jungle/Intelligent Drum and Bass label based out of England. She worked for them until they moved out of the country 3 years later. Since then, Mizz K has been an active part of (and working non-stop in) the electronic/dance entertainment industry; exploring the many different avenues and opportunities like: engineering & production, event coordination, management, and of course, DJing, MCing, and live performances.
Mizz K is also known as The Duchess, one of the most well-known and established MC’s in the underground Drum and Bass scene in South Florida. She has been ripping up the mic for over 8 years. When she decided to begin her DJ career 4 years ago, she never dreamed that one day she would be able to simultaneously combine both her MC and DJ skills together to make her a singularly unique live performance. She has a weekly show on www.womb.tv called "Switch Time", which airs every Saturday from 4PM - 6PM EST. She is currently finishing up an album with the group M5, scheduled for release in 2007. She is also finishing up new solo singles and remixes for release in 2007.
Mizz K is an active part of Infrastructure, Jungala, Four4ths, Geishaz, and Decibel NYC. She has been featured in events such as Ultra, Candyland, Mix Masters @ Sony Ice Palace, Magical Maydaze, Journey Into Space @ The Miami Planetarium, Ice @ Las Vegas, Torque @ Screamers (longest running Florida weekly for the last 8 years), and as a resident @ Infrastructure Thursdays @ Lounge 16 (longest running Miami DnB weekly for the last 3 years). Mizz K has also played and worked with artists such as Juju, Shimon, Vegas BC, Marcus Intallex, High Contrast, John B, Total Science, DJ Craze, Shy FX, AK1200, Soulslinger, Aquasky, Krafty Kuts, Rennie Pilgrem, BLIM, DJ Hyper, DJ John Alvarado, M5, Keoki, Simply Jeff, Freq Nasty . . . . . . & the list goes on and on.
